FAQ

When should I book my newborn photo session?

And other frequently asked questions…..

Why choose a studio newborn photographer?

Simply put, it takes the stress out of having someone in your home for 3+ hours. After you bring your new little bundle home it will be a whirlwind of sleepless nights, visitors, and trying to keep yourself, and your baby, well-fed and clean. The last thing you need to worry about 1 week postpartum is having to clean up the house to make it look like something you see on Pinterest!

For most of my clients, this is the second trip out of the house with their baby, besides visiting the pediatrician. I make the experience comfortable and easy and provide plenty of snacks to enjoy while you wait.

How old should my newborn baby be?

Ideally, newborn sessions take place when your baby is under 2 weeks old. However, if your baby is born early, we will communicate about weight and adjusted age before we set our appointment. When you book your session, I have your estimated due date marked on my calendar. All you have to do is let me know when your baby has arrived and we will get your session scheduled. Getting those sweet poses and sleepy faces is easier when your baby is very new and very sleepy.

What if my baby is a little bit older?

Newborn photos take place before the baby is 2 weeks old to ensure a sleepy, comfortable baby throughout the session. Babies older than 2 weeks are more alert and tend to not like being wrapped and posed. If you are wanting truly newborn photos I highly recommend that you book as early as possible to get your spot on the session calendar.

How long should the session last?

A newborn session typically lasts 2-3 hours. This gives me time to build a beautiful gallery for you to choose from and plenty of time to take a break to feed the baby or change outfits and set-ups.

Will the other family members be included?

Yes! Unless you tell me otherwise, I will always get photos of Mom, Dad, and siblings with the new member of the family. I get sibling and family pictures done first so that the older children can go play at the park down the street with a parent if they wish while we finish up the newborn portion.

What should we wear?

Parents and siblings are encouraged to wear classic neutrals or coordinating colors. I keep the studio space very warm for my little clients so if you wear a sweater for your photo make sure you have a t-shirt to change into. It can get very warm.

Any special instructions for a baby?

I give all of my clients a prep guide when we schedule your session. But here are a few basic tips.

  • Don’t worry about bringing outfits for your baby. I have plenty of sweet hats, bonnets, rompers, and wraps and will have everything ready to go when you arrive.

  • Feed baby right before you head over for your appointment.

  • Dress baby in a zip or button-front outfit

  • Bring a pacifier. Even if they don’t typically take one. When a baby is just right, cozy, and posed perfectly, a pacifier can help soothe them for just the right amount of time to get that perfect shot.
